Beautifully functional.
I make furniture that is a joy to use and admire. Utilising classic joinery techniques, the joints can be concealed or showcased. The natural characteristics of the wood, which were slowly developed over at least 100 years, create enough interest so I try to keep my work secondary to this.
The twists and turns of the grain develop as the tree oriented itself to the sun, the knots and bark inclusions are trapped as branches change in size or fall during a storm, twin trunks form so crotches develop, there can be marks from nails hammered in to create treehouses or advertise village fairs, spalting occurs from fungal infections, burrs grow as the tree combats an infection, and on, and on.
